US eases crypto exports to EU

No big deal - we're buying elsewhere anyway

The US has eased its rules on exporting encryption products to the EU and other selected countries.

This is because businesses in these countries have been happily buying their strong encryption elsewhere - from Baltimore Technologies in Ireland - and US crypto houses are losing out.

It is nice to see a US government climb down, but technically the announcement isn't that exciting.

US companies can now sell their good ol' American encryption without a licence to the 15 EU member states and Australia, Norway, Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland, Japan, New Zealand and Switzerland.

They can also send off their product as soon as they receive an order. Before the easing of export rules US companies had to hold off shipping their product for 30 days to customers in these nations.

The distinction between government and non-government end users has also been scrapped. ®
