OVH decides to Fauquier the cloud in America

That's Fauquier County, Viriginia, chosen as its first US bit barn and HQ

French cloud concern OVH has planted its flag in the United States, choosing Fauquier County, Virginia, as its headquarters and the site of its first data centre in the nation.

OVH's site links straight to Virginia governor Terry McAuliffe's announcement of the deal in which he says the US$47 million project will bring 54 jobs to the town. McAuliffe says OVH will bring dark fibre to the site and is chuffed at having beaten North Carolina in the race to bring some lovely new high-tech jobs to the State.

OVH CEO Laurent Allard's contribution to the canned statement says “Fauquier County offers a unique mix of a high-end, innovative digital infrastructure combined with a business and employee-friendly environment, along with a dedicated team that greatly facilitated our move.”

Local outlet Fauquier Now explains “greatly facilitated” by reporting “the county, the Commonwealth of Virginia and developer Vint Hill Village LLC will fund the installation of fiber optic cable to serve the business park at Fauquier’s eastern edge” to the tune of a US$1m, plus a $2m tax holiday. The paper also tells us the data centre will inhabit “... the former Army base, which had specialized in electronic eavesdropping for about 50 years.”

There's no word on how big OVH's bit barn will be, but Fauquier Now suggests there's room to grow at the Vint Hill Business Park if the company wants to add a second or third hall once it fills the space it has bought. The $47m figure mentioned in the governor's release doesn't suggest a colossal build, although if the exisiting building was indeed used for electronic surveillance it will likely have decent power and cooling rigs in place. Perhaps OVH can upgrade the building quite quickly and spend more on servers and other kit.

OVH has announced a plan to build a dozen new data centres around the world. The Register is aware it is weeks away from revealing its Australian operations, among other new sites. ®
