Here's the relevant bits from VMworld, sliced and diced just for you

New boxen and such, in handy A-Z format

VMworld Here's part one of our three-part round-up of what's hot and what's not from VMworld 2016.

Axcient announced v 1.5 of Fusion, its consolidated secondary storage in the cloud offering, with new cloud orchestration and workflow automation capabilities. The company claims it provides complete IT resilience and agility from the cloud.

Version 1.5 of its product has single-click file and folder recovery, better user experience with simplified protection and recovery workflows, and faster replication performance with recovery point objectives (RPOs) of minutes. It’s available now.

Hazelcast, with its open source in-memory data grid tech, says its v3.6.3 software is now available as an image in the Microsoft Azure Marketplace. It provides high-availability in the cloud with partition groups for failure domains across Microsoft Azure Regions. Hazelcast says its software comes with integration options for cloud management and configuration such as Apache jclouds, AWS, Azure, Consul, Eureka, Jetty Web Sessions, Kubernetes, Mesos, Tomcat Web Session, and Zookeeper.

It includes container deployment options for Docker, Cloud Foundry and OpenShift. The Hazelcast open source community has created client APIs for programming environments such as Java, Scala, .Net/C#, C++, Python, Node.js, and Clojure.

All-flash array supplier Kaminario has partnered with ClusterHQ to build a storage management plug-in for Flocker, the open source container data volume manager. It will allow Kaminario K2 array customers to run and manage containerised Docker environments on their array.

Kingston Digital’s 2.5-inch SATA 6Gbit/s DC400 SSD is an entry-level enterprise drive for data centre server use for customers who deploy a rip-and-replace strategy. It is ideal for read-intensive applications such as boot, web servers and lower data rate operational databases and analytics.

It comes in 400GB, 480GB, 800GB and 960GB capacities. The 400GB and 800GB capacities are performance-optimised with greater IOPs for faster application performance and reduced storage latency. Sequential read/write performance us up to 555/535 MB/sec and random read/write IOPS are up to 99,000/88,000 IOPS.

Luminex is announcing its Mainframe Data Integration (MDI) platform to provides secure data interchange between mainframes and distributed systems via FICON channels. These have lower overhead than mainframe TCP/IP and replace unsecured FTP connections. It has a core transport system, based on its Mainframe Virtual Tape technology, and with extensible "profiles" to direct bidirectional workflows for data sharing, transformation and movement. Luminex says MDI is good for the aggregation of Big Data across the enterprise.

Nexenta, the software-only storage supplier, has announced general availability (GA) of the enterprise and community editions of NexentaFusion 1.0, simplified storage management and analytics, and the newest version of NexentaStor 5.0, the company’s flagship Open software-defined storage product. V5 NexentaStor provides All-Flash reference architectures and new kernel based high-performance replication (HPR) that delivers continuous asynchronous replication for applications that require as close to zero Recover Point Objectives (RPO) as possible without performance degradation.

It has a redesigned multi-tenant vCenter plug-in and vSphere VVOL support.

Nexenta has an All-Flash Zone at its VMWorld booth (1757) with participation from Dell, Lenovo, Mellanox, Micron, SanDisk, Supermicro, and VMware. Validated VSAN customers are eligible for a promotion of NexentaConnect, which provides NFS and SMB file services for VSAN with integrated management through vCenter.

The promotion is available through December 30th, 2016 and includes a NexentaConnect for VMware Virtual SAN license with an unlimited number of licensed sockets to match customer’s VMware Virtual SAN licenses as well as day-zero Nexenta technical support for 12 months.

Primary Data has introduced its DataSphere data orchestration platform at VMWorld. It unites enterprises’ different storage resources across flash, object/cloud, SAN, and NAS systems for the first time. It transparently connects storage infrastructure from any vendor, media or protocol under a single, global dataspace, allowing data to easily move between server, shared and cloud storage without application interruption.

We’re told it expands the Storage-Policy Based Management (SPBM) and VM-aware storage features of VMware vSphere across heterogeneous storage environments, and serves as a certified universal VASA provider for VVOLs. It enhances VMware SPBM to include more granular options for data placement and movement, as well as automation that aligns the right data to the right storage at the right time.

DataSphere is available from Primary Data and its resellers.

Western Digital’s HGST-branded Ultrastar SN150 PCI Express (PCIe) NVMe solid state drive is certified for use with VMware Virtual SAN and vSphere. It is available in a low-profile, half-height, half-length (HHHL), add-in card form factor and uses VMware’s in-box NVMe driver.

Part duo to follow shortly. ®
