RIP Nexus Player – the truth

Google has told El Reg that its smart TV gizmo Nexus Player is not quite dead, despite rumors to the contrary, after it was removed from the Google Store.

"Nexus Player is still available on some retail sites," a spokesperson said.

"Android TV continues to be a living room favorite as one of the best smart TV experiences. We are pleased with the success and have seen millions of activations so far."

In other words, the Player is on its way out, but isn't dead yet. It's pretty clear that the Android-powered set-top box is being phased out.

However, Google isn't going to pull a Revolv and stop support. At Google I/O several engineers confirmed that the Nexus Player will be supported in at least the next flavor of Android, the as-yet unnamed Android N.
