Microsoft tool-crafter Idera buys database, app firm Embarcadero
No word on what it paid money men
Idera, a provider of monitoring and administration tools for Microsoft's SQL Server, is to acquire Embarcadero from private equity company Thoma Bravo. The terms have not been disclosed.
Embarcadero's products include ER/Studio for database modelling, DBArtisan for administration, and RAD Studio for application development across Windows and mobile based on Object Pascal (Delphi) and C++.
Thoma Bravo acquired Embarcadero for around $200m in 2007. "We’ve worked closely with Wayne and his executive team to drive substantial growth during our longstanding relationship," says managing partner Orlando Bravo."
"Embarcadero’s multi-platform database management products combined with Idera’s deep SQL database performance management expertise will create the most comprehensive portfolio of database management solutions in the market" says Idera's press release.
The acquisition makes sense in bringing together two Windows-centric database tools companies, though you can expect some product rationalisation. Application development is new to Idera though. "The application performance tools deliver similar business benefits to an entirely new community of users," says Idera CEO Randy Jacops.
Delphi developers are wondering what impact the acquisition may have. Some are hopeful. "If Embarcadero is worth buying, it means that Delphi is worth betting on," says open source developer A Bouchez.®
