BT set to undercut rivals with return to mobile biz

Reports suggest telecoms giant will unveil plans this week

BT will launch its own 4G network when it returns to the mobile market within the next few days, it has been reported.

According to the Telegraph, the former state monopoly – which proposed a huge £12.5bn takeover of mobe operator EE late last year – will name its service BT Mobile and offer it only to the firm's broadband customers for now.

Earlier this month the UK's Competition and Markets Authority wrote to BT's rivals to ask them to submit their views on the planned acquisition of EE.

BT's 4G offering will reportedly undercut Blighty's biggest mobile operators – Vodafone, O2 and EE.

And the package is understood to be sim-only, so will not include handsets at this stage – a strategy that makes sense, given the planned EE gobble.

BT struck a wholesale deal to use EE's network for its return to the consumer mobile business prior to the telco giant's proposed takeover of the carrier.

The Register sought comment from BT, but the firm hadn't got back to us at time of publication. ®
