Apple CEO: Fandroids are BINNING Android in favour of IPHONES

Tim Cook puts numbers on his world domination claim

Apple is wolfing down KitKats and Lollipops for lunch after it emerged that most iPhone 6 users have come from Android.

iBling salesman Tim Cook told the Wall Street Journal that only 15 per cent of iPhone 6 customers have upgraded from other iPhones.

It’s the first time he’s given a number for this trend, and although he’s hinted at it before, it goes some way to explaining Apple’s stellar results, including sales of 74.5m iPhones, and Samsung’s fall from grace.

This may be in part thanks to the success of iMessage, which is creating a closed ecosystem much like that enjoyed by Blackberry with BBM. It’s ironic that Blackberry’s John Chen has since railed against iMessage for just this, demanding that Apple port iMessage to Blackberry.

Yet it seems that Android, which has the most to lose, is the biggest source of new iPhone customers. In the earnings call for the Apple record results Cook said “the current iPhone lineup experienced the highest Android switcher rate in any of the last three launches in any of the three previous years”.

That tiny percentage of Apple users upgrading may mean that lots are locked into two year contracts with earlier iPhones and they will migrate as the opportunity presents itself.

Where Apple is still not playing is in the low end market, with nothing to challenge the Landfill Androids, the players there are however coming under pressure from Microsoft, and Cook said nothing about attempts to take a bite out of that territory. ®
