AWS introduces granular billing tool

Drops bills in a bucket for drips of usage data

Amazon Web Services (AWS) has introduced a new billing tool, dubbed “Programmatic Access” that will offer multiple daily insights into how much you’re spending in its cloudy corral.

To make the new tool work, you need to have a bucket in the S3 storage service. That bucket needs to be accessible to AWS. Once you get that up and running, the cloud company will dump a .CSV file into your nominated bucket, “several times a day”. You can then download the files, which boast 25 fields.

We imagine users of the service would automate their affairs, so that new .CSVs are sucked into their financial management software for rapid processing, with all those lovely fields mapped to the innards of the software. That sounds like just the sort of thing a CFO would like, given their insistence on worrying about sudden unplanned expenditures of the source cloud services’ elasticity could create.

AWS seems to have that sort of thing in mind, with the author of the post that announces the new feature saying he is “ … really looking forward to seeing the apps emerge that take advantage of this data.”

One downside: even though Amazon creates the bills, you’ll pay to store them in your buckets. ®
