Can 24/7 porn rescue Google TV?

'Cheap Trixxx', 'Feet First', and more – all Vivid, all the time

Google TV has not exactly set the world on fire, but a time-tested treat that catapulted such technologies as DVD, VHS, and even Super 8 into millions of homes is now available on the sputtering service.

You guessed right: porn.

And not just any ol' porn, but a 24/7 outpouring of smut from one of the giants in the industry, Vivid Entertainment (NSFW).

"Vivid for Google TV gives our fans a new way to enjoy Vivid movies in high quality HD and with other benefits that provide a very appealing, highly enjoyable, and user friendly experience," said Vivid Entertainment cofounder Steven Hirsch when announcing the new service on Monday.

"We spent more than a year developing a code base for a robust, standalone Internet-TV channel with a friendly interface for the consumer that can be used with the current Google TV technology and other Internet protocol presentation methods now in development," he added.

Once described by Details magazine as "the Microsoft of the porn industry", Vivid's steady flow of lubricious content may be just the juice that the flaccid Google TV needs to give it a lift.

That is, if you like that sort of thing, of course.

Google TV was launched in May of 2010, but hasn't attracted much of a following since. Late last month, it upgraded its user interface significantly, but it's too soon to know whether that update will have much of an effect on Google TV uptake.

The Vivid service is now available through an HTML5 app that can be accessed through Google TV by simply loading the Vivid pay-for-view website, www.vivid.com. If you're a Vivid subscriber, you're automatically a Vivid-on-Google-TV subscriber.

Vivid, of course, is facing its own challenges, what with the deluge of free porn flooding the interwebs. As one chap active in the bump-and-tickle biz put it somewhat colorfully, "Prior to 2006, a shaved monkey could make millions in adult, and many did," but now things are tough – tough enough for the industry to seek out new distribution methods such as Google TV.

The Reg is not a Vivid.com subscriber, so we're unable to test how well the company's "award-winning adult movies, celebrity sex tapes, XXX parodies of popular superheroes, educational videos and other content" translate to the Google TV experience.
